so besides using adobe audition, is there a more direct aproach to pull the audio from an avi file. I'd like to rip some stuff to audio, and I don't need to keep the video. I can rip dvds just fine with the software I have, but avi. different story.

I've used Gold Wave to batch process large numbers of AVI files, extracting and saving the audio as Ogg Vorbis files. It's very easy.

goldwave is good, but my preference is switch audio file converter from NCH Swiftsound. the plus version will even delete the old avi files, so you won't have to deal with them again

Another option I've used is just using the disk writer plugin from winam. though you'd probably want to convert it to something else, as the default plugin spits it out as .wav. However I imagine you could get an mp3 plugin for winamp and do the same thing. Just one more option.

I too am looking for a good AVI splitter. I'm hesitant to use something like goldwave or diskwriter since most of the avi files I have already have audio streams compressed as MP3 and the last thing I want to do is transcode them (since a lot are already at the lower end of acceptable quality). I tried a shareware one (I forgot the name) but it couldn't open any of the larger video files I have without choking (plus I couldn't get it to work on the others). Anyone have any answers?

Yep. I too use switch. It's very easy to navigate with jaws and has worked to my satisfaction thus far!

actually, all NCH products have worked beautifully for me. not to mention just reinstalling them, rather than buying them. lol
